MaxMD (www.max.md) by contract with MoldData is the exclusive provider of .md domain names in the United States and over 90 countries worldwide. .md is marketed as an Internet domain dedicated to the medical community. Many independent physicians and group medical practices, medical associations, patient groups, healthcare corporations and medical institutions use the .md domain name for their Web addresses. MaxMD provides professional, permanent and portable web addresses to physicians, group medical practices, medical associations, patient groups, healthcare corporations and medical institutions in the only Internet domain dedicated to the worldwide medical community. MaxMD has constructed an encrypted communication solution at the TLD level that enables users to communicate securely and safeguard Electronic Protected Information (ePHI) in compliance with the technical standards and safeguards established by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. MaxMD also provides physician authentication to selected registrants through the .md Verified Physician Badge. This authentication system uses D.E.A. numbers to verify a physician is licensed to practice. If the physician is licensed, MaxMD grants them permission to use a logo on their site. This logo is then embedded with code (similar concept to the VeriSign logo), which shows viewers that the owner of the site is a licensed physician.
The .md domain acts as a broad interoperable encrypted electronic communications network throughout the Top Level Domain (Patent Pending) that allows independent sub-domains to communicate in compliance with the Technical Standards and Safeguards established by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
.md is used by some medical practices to abbreviate the medical doctor title.
