Medal of Honor
The highest U.S. military decoration awarded for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life and above and beyond the call of duty in action” during actual armed conflict with an enemy of the United States. Established by act of Congress in December 1861, the Medal of Honor may be awarded to members of any branch of service. Each service (Army, Navy/Marine Corps, and Air Force) has a slightly different pattern for the medal itself, but all share the distinctive light blue ribbon sprinkled with white stars.
