Plot

The Medal of Honor is the highest award that can be given to a member of the U.S. military for courageous acts extending far beyond the call of duty. Since the award was instituted, near the time of the Civil War, approximately 3,500 of these medals have been presented, many of them after death. This documentary explores the history of the medal and its recipients, focusing on the situations of six individuals who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Somalia. Among the heroes whose stories are given in-depth consideration are Vietnam veterans, Clarence Sasser and James Stockdale. Sasser was a medic, who, although severely wounded himself, continued to work diligently to save the lives of the injured men in his unit. Stockdale was incarcerated in the infamous Hoa Lo prison (nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton" by American prisoners of war who were held there), and lived through seven years of torture. The stories of heroism are told through dramatic reenactments and excerpts from interviews with medal of honor recipients and companions who were there. ~ Alice Duncan, Rovi
