Until recently the Libyan Government owned and regulated all the local media outlets in Libya through the Jamahiriya News Agency. On 29 January 2006 Saif al-Islam Gaddafi the son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi announced that the Libyan government is allowing private radio and television stations and printed news publications. Saif al-Islam Gaddafi's private media company One Nine Media (in reference to the date of the Libyan revolution 01/09/1969) launched a radio station Allibya FM in shortly after this to be the first privately owned media broadcasting station in Libya.[citation needed]
