Mediacity:uk Metrolink Station is a future station for the Manchester Metrolink light rail system in Manchester, North-West England. It is to be the terminus of a 360 metres (0.22 mi)-long branch line from the Eccles Line which is being constructed as part of Phase 3a of the Metrolink extension project. The extension will branch off from the Eccles Line just after Harbour City. The Metrolink station will serve the mediacity:uk property development in Salford Quays, including the new BBC North building, as well as the Lowry art gallery and the Imperial War Museum North.

History

A 1924 map of Salford Docks

Mediacity:uk is a property development within Salford Quays, on the site of the former Salford Docks. When an active port, the quays were served by numerous railway goods lines.

The extension of Metrolink into Salford Quays was part of a programme of urban renewal for the area around the Manchester Ship Canal. Published plans to run a light rail system into Salford Quays have existed since around 1987, initially as far as Broadway;[1] the proposals evolved, with later plans to build a branch line to serve the newly-built Lowry art gallery.[2] The Mediacity extension replaces the previous proposal to extend Metrolink to the Lowry.[3]

Trams

A new generation of Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) has been ordered for Metrolink from the rail manufacturer Bombardier. Four of these new LRVs will be required to operate the new MediaCity line.[4] These Flexity Swift LRVs, designated 'M5000', are similar to the K5000 series used in the German cities of Cologne and Bonn, and similar to the low-floor models used by London’s Tramlink.

The first delivery of the new trams from Bombardier arrived at Metrolink's Queens Road depot in July 2009 and will go through approximately 3 months of testing and driver training before entering service in the autumn.[5][6]
