or MED

a multiprotein complex (20 — 30 polypeptides, ≈2 MDa) that acts as a transcriptional coactivator of yeast. It bridges general initiation factors that bind to promoters of protein genes, and the C-terminal domain of the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II. The complex is distinct from that composed of general transcriptional activators, or of upstream stimulatory activity (USA) factors. Several mammalian complexes that have mediator-like transcriptional activity have been characterized. The human equivalents are TRAP and SMCC.
