Meet the Selah Jubilees

Album Review: Meet the Selah Jubilees

Review

The Chosen Gospel Singers were a spiritual group in the sanctified style fronting such vocalists as the sing-and-preach Bob Crutcher, Joe Johnson from The Trumpeteers, jazz-soul singer Lou Rawls and the hard-working Tommy Ellison, who later went on to form The Five Singing Stars. These are exciting selections from various labels, recorded between 1952 and 1963. Side B features the great Thermon Ruth and the Selah Singers, who sang both R&B and gospel under various aliases during the '40s and '50s. The material here from their postwar Arista, Continental, Gotham and Mercury period is entirely gospel -- close jubilee harmonies with sparse accompaniment. The songs are taken from rare 45s and 78s. There's good overall sound quality (cassette only). ~ Opal Louis Nations, Roots & Rhythm Newsletter, All Music Guide
