Biography

Meg Tilly has always been close-mouthed about the date and place of her birth; raised in British Columbia, she aspired to be a dancer, but a serious back injury put an end to this dream. Even so, she made her first film appearance in a bit part as an auditioning dancer in Fame (1980). For the next few years, she alternated between worthwhile endeavors like Tex (1982) and bill-paying potboilers like Psycho II (1983). As Chloe, the very young girlfriend of thirtysomething suicide victim Kevin Costner in The Big Chill, Tilly shrivelled the hearts of the audience with her poignant observation, "I don't know very many happy people." In 1985, she earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Sister Agnes, a young nun accused of murdering her newborn baby, in Agnes of God. By the early '90s, her screen appearances became increasingly, frustratingly rare. In 1994, Tilly wrote a slim volume titled Singing Songs, and that same year played a small recurring role on the prime-time TV soap opera Winnetka Road. Meg Tilly is the older sister of actress Jennifer Tilly. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

After a serious back injury forced her to give up dance she became an actress. Tilly later appeared in Valmont, The Two Jakes with Jack Nicholson and Leaving Normal, as well as Body Snatchers.

Tilly was the first choice for the role of Constanze Mozart in Milos Forman's film Amadeus, having received glowing appraisals of her rehearsal work by both her would-be costar Tom Hulce and director Forman. However, she sustained a serious leg injury playing soccer with some local children and was forced to drop out. The role later went to Elizabeth Berridge.

The book is written in first person and the narrator has a very child-like voice. In her website forward, Tilly states that although the stories are fictional, they are based on her childhood experiences.

Tilly has three children: Emily (born 1984) and David (born 1986), by her marriage to film producer Tim Zinnemann, which ended in 1989, and a son, Will (born 1990), from her five-year relationship with British actor Colin Firth. Her second husband, John Calley, was 30 years her senior. He is a former president of Sony Pictures; they were married in 1995 and divorced in 2002.
