Game Description
First appearing on the 16-bit Super NES platform in 1994, Capcom's Mega Man X series moved away from the classic "Blue Bomber" of old and introduced a new, more powerful Mega Man. First-time players can now familiarize themselves with the character with the release of Mega Man Xtreme for the Game Boy Color. The story is as follows: X is a member of the Maverick Hunters, a futuristic police force. It seems an evil hacker named Techno has seized control of the Maverick computer system and revived some of X's past enemies. As a result, the bad boys of Mega Man Xtreme are a group of rejects from the past: famous villains such as Chill Penguin, Spark Mandrill and Flame Stag.
While levels and environments are designed to be reminiscent of previous games in the series, there is one notable change for the handheld version. You'll now have to take on the enemies face to face, and if you leave the screen, the baddies will follow after you. Returning to the game is the classic power-up system, in which X searches for upgrades to his circuitry.
Locating a number of items will give him new moves, such as the ability to dash or head-butt specific objects. Another feature is your character's armor suit that packs a powerful crushing punch. X can control the suit until a certain amount of damage is incurred. Mega Man X is compatible with all versions of the Game Boy and includes battery backup for saving data.
Review: Overall
Mega Man, one of the longest running series in console history, has made several appearances on the Game Boy, but Mega Man Xtreme marks the debut of the little blue guy on the Game Boy Color. It isn't so much an original game as it is a remix, tossing in levels from the first two Mega Man X games on the Super NES. Fans will be happy to hear that the traditional gameplay of the series has been faithfully reproduced on Nintendo's color handheld. When you first play the title, you might be convinced that Capcom released a short game. That's deceptive, however, as the storyline seems to take place within Mega Man's cerebral processes. This means there are different game experiences depending on the difficulty level selected. Mega Man must relive his previous adventures, so the entire game cannot be explored until a player selects all of the difficulty levels.
While there are four stages each from Mega Man X and X2, which represent a departure from the original Mega Man games. The focus of these stages is not so much on the level before the boss, but of the boss battle itself. While this concept is fine for other games, it does manage to take away some of the basic charm the Mega Man series offered in the past, which is probably why the X games were never quite as popular.
Still, the representation of the levels in Mega Man Xtreme are very accurate reproductions of the versions in the Super NES games. While obviously some graphic cutbacks have been made, due to the limitations of the system, the levels are still colorful and vibrant, and the enemies, while many have been scaled down from their original sizes, are still clear and visually pleasing as ever.
One of the problems with Mega Man Xtreme, however, especially when it comes to casual gamers who want to pick up a simple game and go, is the game's high difficulty. Because the game focuses on battles with powerful bosses, one has to be quite adept at picking up the patterns of the bosses and knowing which weapons to hit them with. These bosses are tough, some of them staggeringly so, and the amount of power refills in the levels are minimal. Those that are there are hidden in obscure places that most gamers will overlook.
All in all, Mega Man Xtreme is a great title for fans of the Mega Man X series on the Super NES, and for anyone who enjoys the general Mega Man gameplay. While the challenge may keep it out of the reach of younger audiences, older gamers will find this title a worthwhile experience.
