Plot

In the fall of 1977, a thirteen-year-old girl named Megumi Yokota vanished under mysterious circumstances from her home in Niigata, a town along the Japanese coast. Twenty-five years later, it was discovered that Megumi was kidnapped by North Korean agents, and the nation's president, Kim Jong-il, publicly acknowledged that she was one of a number of Japanese citizens who were abducted by as part of the ongoing cold war between the two nations. While North Korean authorities have acknowledged that thirteen people were seized during missions by North Korean agents between 1977 an 1983, some Japanese experts believe that as many as four hundred people have been abducted by agents of North Korea. The story of Megumi Yokota's disappearance and the search for truth by her family provides the backdrop for the documentary Megumi, which features interviews and reenactments which brings the family's search for truth and justice to life. Megumi was an official selection at the 2008 Rotterdam Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
