Melancton Smith

Smith, Melancton (1810-1893) Union naval officer. From New York City, Smith began his naval career in the Pacific and in the Caribbean; he served in the Seminole War (1839-40) and in the Mexican War, during which he was executive officer of the Pensacola Navy Yard. During the Civil War, Smith fought in a number of engagements, including with Admiral David Farragut at New Orleans, where he heavily damaged a Confederate ram. His actions won him promotion to captain in 1862. He commanded several ships, including the Wabash, in which he participated in the attack on Fort Fisher, North Carolina.
