History
The town Mellerud was a rural village until the railway was built through it in 1879 -- the so called Bergslagernas Järnväg (BJ) and Dalslands Järnväg (DJ). It received status as a market town (köping) in 1908, at which time it had some 600 inhabitants. This status is obsolete since 1971, but Mellerud is the seat of a larger municipality.
