Review

Columbia Records was in the center of the jazz-rock fusion movement of the early '70s, with most of the major artists in that genre under contract. This collection samples some of, but not all of, those groups at their height of their popularity. Of course Herbie Hancock's horribly out-of-tune funk icon "Chameleon," leads the set, but Weather Report's "Mysterious Traveler," and Mahavishnu Orchestra's "The Noonward Race" are much better. Meditational serenity is the earmark for Carlos Santana's spiritual "Yours Is the Light," while "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" by the Bitches Brew band of Miles Davis set the tone for all of this, and is definitive. The Tony Williams cuts don't belong, as they are not as high quality as the others, representing the initial downside and down slide of this (at the time) seminal music. ~ Michael G.
