Meltemi is reported to be a MeeGo Linux-based smartphone operating system designed by Nokia for low-cost mobile devices, to replace the Symbian OS smartphone and S40 feature phone operating systems.[1][2][3] As a rumor this information became available from Wall Street Journal,[4][5] though it was later confirmed to be true by The Register.[6]
Writing in The Guardian's Technology Blog, Jean-Louis Gassée observes of two of Nokia's other operating systems that "both Meego and WP7 were, and are, too heavy for entry-level phones".[7] In Gassée's view, Nokia "must make its dumbphone smarter without introducing expensive hardware" to stay in the 'dumbphone' market. Gassée reports that Meltemi "targets the low end and intends to replace the S40 engine for Nokia's dumbphones, AKA feature phones."[7]
As of December 2011[update] Nokia has neither confirmed nor denied work on the S40 successor.
The name Meltemi means the cool northerly katabatic wind that blows over Greece, mostly during the summer.[8] This seems to reflect the Maemo tradition of naming operating system releases after alphabetic list of wind names.[9]
