| Music Encyclopedia: Mensuration |
The system devised in the late Middle Ages governing rhythmic relationships between long, breve/double whole-note and semibreve/whole-note. The system was establishedc 1250 by Franco of Cologne and continued in use until the end of the 16th century. Under the mensural system, the relationship between the long and the breve (modus, ‘mode’), the breve and the semibreve/whole-note (tempus, ‘time’) and the semibreve/whole-note and the minim/half-note (prolatio, ‘prolation’) may be either 3:1 (or perfect) or, as in modern notation, 2:1 (or imperfect). Modus is normally imperfect. Imperfect time and imperfect (or minor) prolation produce a metro the equivalent of modern 2/4; imperfect time and perfect (or major) prolation produce 6/8; perfect time and imperfect prolation produce 3/4; and both perfect produce 9/8. Other devices, such as the placing of a dot and the substitution of black notes for white ones (‘coloration’), are used to define particular aspects of rhythmic notation.
