" Mercadona is the #2 supermarket operator (behind Carrefour) in Spain and one of the fastest growing retailers in the world. It operates more than 1,200 stores in about 45 provinces, an online shopping site, and about 10 distribution centers across Spain. Mercadona (Valencian: [meɾkaˈðɔna], Spanish: [merkaˈðona]) is a Spanish supermarket operator. The Valencia-based company is the largest supermarket chain and food distributor in Spain with 1,357 stores[1] on mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. As of 2011 the company had a turnover of 17.831 million Euro, a profit of 474 million and more than 22% marketshare in food distribution. They also operate an online delivery service in selected areas.
Mercadona was ranked the 9th most reputable company in the world in 2009 by the Reputation Institute as listed in Forbes Magazine.[2]
Mercadona is planning to expand to Italy, France, Belgium and Portugal. According to sources, Mercadona will initiate the expansion to Italy first where it will buy a small chain of 30-40 stores in the North of the country.[3]
