An individual who tends to be stocky and of medium height with well developed muscles. There is a tendency in Western cultures to believe that the most desirable body shape is mesomorphic-muscular with little body fat. This belief, called mesomorphism by sociologists, is reinforced by advertisements in the mass media which portray muscularity and slimness as being associated with health, fitness, and success. This often leads to the assumption that all mesomorphs share these positive characteristics. There is also the implication that mesomorphy can be acquired by a disciplined, controlled, efficient lifestyle. However, body type is determined mainly by inheritance. See also somatotype.

An individual who tends to be stocky, of medium height with well-developed muscles. See also somatotype.
