abbr.: MREBP; a mammalian protein that activates basal and heavy metal-induced transcription of metallothionein genes by binding to the metal response element in their promoter regions. MREBP1 contains a DNA-binding region of six C2H2 zinc fingers and three functional activation domains. Knockout of the mouse gene results in death of embryos with variable degrees of liver damage.
