An antiseptic used for the treatment of recurrent infections of the urinary tract; it acts by being transformed to formaldehyde. It is available as tablets without a prescription, but only from pharmacies.

Side effects:
include gastrointestinal disturbances, bladder irritation, and rash.

Precautions:
hexamine should not be taken by people who are severely dehydrated or by those with severe kidney disease.

Hiprex.
