methylation of DNA
the occurrence in vertebrate DNA of varying amounts of 5-methylcytosine which arises from methylation of cytosine bases where they occur in the sequence CpG. The methylation status of DNA correlates with its functional activity: inactive genes are more heavily methylated. See also CpG islands.
