In the USA (but not in New England) a group of counties consisting of a central city with a population over 50 000 and a hinterland of over 100 000 people. Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas have an urban population of 1 000 000, and are made up of a number of geographically distinct Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas.
