Michael Cristofer is best known as the author of 1977's Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play, The Shadow Box. The TV adaptation of the play, starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Emmy. He wrote screenplays for Original Sin (2001), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Breaking Up (1997), and The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990).

Also an actor and director, Cristofer has appeared in several films including, Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995), The Little Drummer Girl (1984), and An Enemy of the People (1978). He appeared on stage in Hamlet; he won a Theater World Award for his portrayal of Trofimov in the Lincoln Sqare production of The Cherry Orchard, and an Obie for his performance in Chinchilla at the Phoenix Theater.

Cristofer's 1998 screen directorial debut, HBO's Gia, earned six Emmy nominations; its star, Angelina Jolie, won a Golden Globe, and Cristofer won the Directors Guild of America Award.

1977The Shadow Box. Cristofer's drama about three terminally ill patients in a hospice wins the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for best play. Cristofer would observe that the play "says something about the fact that life is not meaningless, that relationships are important, that people can communicate, that things like love and hope and trust and faith are possible in a real sense."

Michael Ivan Cristofer (born 22 January 1945, Trenton, New Jersey) is an American playwright and filmmaker. He received Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play for The Shadow Box in 1977.

For eight years he worked as artistic advisor and finally co-artistic director of River Arts Repertory in Woodstock, N.Y., a company which produced new plays by writers such as Richard Nelson, Mac Wellman, Len Jenkin, Eric Overmeyer and many others including the American premiere of Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women–a production which later moved to Off-Broadway. Also at River Arts, he wrote stage adaptations of the films Love Me or Leave Me and the legendary Casablanca, and directed Joanne Woodward in his own adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts. His most recent work for the theater, The Whore and Mr. Moore, is in workshop at the Actor’s Studio where he is a member.
