Michael Davitt
Davitt, Michael (1950- ), poet. Born in Cork, he was educated at the North Monastery and at UCC, where he founded the poetry broadsheet and journal Innti in 1970. He was a central figure in a new movement in Gaelic poetry in the early 1970s. At RTÉ he worked as a producer from 1988. Gleann ar Ghleann (1982) was a first collection, followed by Bligeard Sráide (1983), An Tost a Scagadh (1993), and Scuais (1998). He became a friend of Seán Ó Ríordáin, to whose metaphysical wit he gave a sharp vernacular edge; and he was also influenced by the American Beat poets.
