Apr 30, 1945. Forty-year-old pilot of the space shuttle Challenger on Jan 28, 1986. It was to have been Commander Smith’s first space flight. Born at Beaufort, NC, Smith perished with all others on board when Challenger exploded. See also: “Challenger Space Shuttle Explosion Anniversary” (Jan 28).
