Michael Kallman is a sergeant with the Broward Sheriff's Office who received scrutiny for joking about police assault upon an unarmed demonstrator in Miami, Florida in November 2003.

Police Brutality

In a debrief with officers under his supervision Kallman said, "the good news about being able to watch you guys live on TV is that the lady with the red dress, I don't know who got her, but it went right through the sign and hit her smack dab in the middle of the head!" A video tape of the debrief was made available on YouTube, in August 2006.

Elizabeth Ritter, the woman who was shot by police, has said that she was present at the demonstration primarily because of her concern that police brutality would occur. The demonstration was to encourage global fair trade.

Kallman apologized for the incident after the tape was made public. The Broward Sheriff's Office has taken no disciplinary action against Kallman. Kallman's immediate supervisor was Major John E. Brooks at the time, which as a result prompted a formal apology from Brooks as well.

Biography

Kallman is a long time veteran of the Broward Sheriff's Office. The beginning of his law enforcement career stemmed from the Miami Police Department and has encompassed nearly every form of law enforcement. This includes road work, special investigations, detective work, homeland security, port security and district security.

Kallman is still employed at the Broward Sheriff's Office at the rank of Sergeant within the Broward Sheriff's Office of Homeland Security, headquartered in Plantation, Florida.
