(b London, 23 March 1944). English composer. He studied at the RAM with Alan Bush and with Thurston Dart at King's College, London. He wrote the seminal book Experimental Music: Cage and Beyond (1974). In his compositions he aims to break down the barrier between popular culture and ‘serious’ composition. He is best known for his film scores, including The Draughtsman's Contract (1982), The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover (1989), Prospero's Books (1991) and The Piano (1993). He has also written five operas, among which The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat (1986) amply demonstrates his musical style in its use of variation and modular form, lyrical vocal lines over restless, repetitive phrases and repeated harmonic blocks.
