Michel de Marolles

French Literature Companion: Michel de Marolles

Marolles, Michel de, abbé de Villeloin (1600-81). French translator of many Latin texts, including the New Testament. Of his generally unimpressive prose versions of Latin poetry, the best known were of Martial's epigrams. His Mémoires for the period up to 1655 are chatty, self-satisfied literary reminiscences. He was a notable collector, whose prints were the origin of the Cabinet des Estampes at the Bibliothèque Nationale.
