Biography

Dirty Three guitarist Mick Turner began a solo career in 1997 with the release of Tren Phantasma, a collection of improvised four-track recordings featuring the contemplative guitar style he used with his group the Dirty Three. The following year, Turner and his bandmate Jim White played live as the Tren Brothers, carrying the album's aesthetic into a concert setting with an arsenal of loop pedals and understated percussion. Several of these dates were opening spots for Cat Power, with whom the duo collaborated on the 1998 album Moon Pix. Turner and White also recorded a 7" for Secretly Canadian Records that year, and followed it with 1999's Marlan Rosa, released by Drag City. In summer 2002, Turner released the Seven Angels EP, a limited-edition set issued by Three Lobed Records. Later that year, his third album Moth arrived. The rarities collection The Blue Trees appeared in 2007. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

Mick Turner is an Australian musician and painter best known as the guitarist for Dirty Three.

Prior to his work with Dirty Three, Turner was a member of several Melbourne based rock bands: (from 1979 till 1988) Sick Things, (from 1983 till 1984) The Moodists, (from 1982 till 1987) Fungus Brains, and (from 1985 till the in 1996) Venom P. Stinger (with Jim White).

In addition to playing with Jim White and Warren Ellis, Mick also runs the Dirty Three's record label, Anchor & Hope and has painted the cover illustration for all of their major albums except their first. He has had art exhibitions around Australia and internationally.

Fellow Dirty Three member, Jim White, plays with Mick: The Tren Brothers, and together they have played with Cat Power, Boxhead Ensemble and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.

Turner has also released three solo albums under his own name, two albums with Jessica Billey[1] under the moniker Bonnevill, as well as a single credited to "Tren Brothers & Sister" featuring Turner, White & Billey.

Turner currently performs his solo work, accompanied by one of several Melbourne drummers: Ian Wadley (member of Bird Blobs), or Marty Brown (drummer with Art of Fighting)
