Micro Supertarz 2000 is the first compilation put out under the aegis of the website www.micromusic.net, a community of bedroom techno composers and retro-game freaks. This CD gathers 17 tracks by as many amateur artists you have never heard of before and most probably will never hear from again. Yet, their music is fancy-free, cheerful, and quite entertaining. Produced with crude computer sampling and editing programs, these low-fi bits sound two-dimensional -- just like the soundtrack of a Game Boy game. But it would be unfair to limit the appeal of this music to Commodore 64 nostalgia: Most have interesting melodies and enough quirkiness to make the whole thing an enjoyable experience. But let's not kid ourselves: None of the tunes on Micro Superstarz 2000 has the potential to become a million-unit single. The CD is enhanced with a cheesy interface and also contains Commodore 64, Atari 2600, and Nintendo emulators. ~ François Couture, Rovi
