(chemical engineering) A membrane separation process in which particles greater than about 20 nanometers in diameter are screened out of a liquid in which they are suspended.


Filtration under pressure through a membrane of small pore size (0.1-10 μm; larger pores than for ultrafiltration). Used for clarification of beverages and to sterilize liquids by filtering out micro-organisms.
