Microrasbora is a genus of small fishes. The generic name means "small Rasbora", however these fish appear to be more closely related to the danios than rasboras.[1] They inhabit mainly Thailand and Myanmar; Microrasbora rubescens has escaped from aquariums and is now an invasive species in many temperate regions, apparently benefitting from global warming.[verification needed]

Current Taxonomy

Microrasbora, until recently, included a number of described species. Microrasbora erythromicron was first proposed to be moved into Danio in 1999.[2] This move has been confirmed by numerous studies.[1][3] However, three of these species, M. gatesi, M. kubotai, and M. nana were moved to a new genus, Microdevario.[3] However, they did not comment on the placement of Microrasbora microphthalma. This leaves Microrasbora rubescens as the only confirmed species in the genus.

Species confirmed in Microrasbora:

  • Microrasbora rubescens Annandale, 1918 – Red Dwarf Rasbora

Unplaced:

  • Microrasbora microphthalma Jiang, Chen & Yang, 2008
  • Microrasbora cf. rubescens "Thuzari" – Glowlight Rasbora, Flame Red Rasbora; tentatively placed here[4]
