Game Description

Microsoft Golf is a multimedia golf simulation for personal computer users running

Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher. The game incorporates sound, animation, and video for

a complete golf game.

Microsoft Golf allows up to four players to play a round of golf at the Torrey Pines

Golf Course, a full 18-hole professionally styled course. Other courses can be purchased in

separate upgrade packages. Players can choose to play at beginner, amateur, or pro levels.

A complete golf bag is included, containing woods, irons, wedges, and a putter.

Players can activate animated fly-bys to get a look at any hole on the course. Rounds can

be saved and given to other players on disk, so players can compete against each other.

Occasionally, play-by-play announcers make comments about shots and let the player

know if his/her ball has gone in the sand or the water.

Review: Overall

Microsoft Golf 2.0 CD is one of the better golfing simulations of the early 1990s. Heeding a call from gamers who didn't have the time or patience to actually learn how to play golf, Microsoft put together a game that allowed gamers to learn the skills of golf without having to walk the hills and valleys of a professional golf course.

The courses for Microsoft Golf 2.0 CD are designed well and appear realistic. The Torrey Pines course is included with the game. Other course can be purchased separately. Each golfer gets a full bag of clubs and, if nothing else, learns which clubs cause the ball to travel farther and higher. Fly-bys are available and show players what the best route to a hole would be. There are not really any hills or valleys on the fairways of the Torrey Pines course, but greens and bunkers are textured and do provide a bit of a challenge.

Microsoft Golf 2.0 CD allows players to take mulligans (do-overs) which is both a good and a bad thing. On one hand, the feature is great if you occasionally rip a shot into the woods or water. On the other hand, it's a bad thing if you take six or seven mulligans on each hole. Microsoft Golf 2.0 CD also allows players to take "gimmies" whenever their ball is within ten feet of the hole. Again, that's also good and bad.

Microsoft Golf 2.0 CD is a fairly good simulation of the Scottish sport of kings, but the Torrey Pines course can get a bit boring. That boredom can be alleviated by buying additional courses, but that can get pricey, so it all evens out. If you like golf but cannot play as often as you like, then you will probably like Microsoft Golf 2.0 CD. Even if you don't like golf, Microsoft Golf 2.0 CD is a quick game to fire up on your desktop and only requires a mouse, which is easy to hide from your boss, but I wouldn't know anything about that.
