MIDEM is the acronym for Marché International du Disque et de l'Edition Musicale which is held been annually in and around the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, France. The event, which is billed as the world's largest trade fair for the music industry, has been held since 1967. Several thousand musicians, producers, managers, and journalists from around the globe regularly attend the event, which is currently held at the end of January.
MIDEM provides a forum for business talks, political and legal discussions. It also is a platform for showcasing new artists, musical trends and music-related products. A series of conferences are also organised to promote MIDEM's growing vocation of educating the music industry about new revenue streams.
Since 2000, the night before MIDEM opens, the Palais des Festivals hosts the NRJ Music Awards. The awards ceremony is organised by NRJ, a French multimedia conglomerate that owns France's most popular music station.
The most recent MIDEM was held 28-31 January 2012.
Despite the large number of concerts, MIDEM is primarily a marketplace. Artists who attend are usually either promoting their own existing enterprise or are promoting Major labels or other corporate bodies. Business forums are also held, for example, the International Indie Summit.
In January 2011, MIDEM 2011 was attended by 6,850 delegates from 3,120 companies (out of which 1,735 had stands or pavilions of their own). The event was covered by 360 journalists from a total of 77 countries. Although there are attendees from all over the world, the majority of delegates are from Western Europe and North America.
