Don't expect this deep house mix to make sense right away. It will more likely sneak up on you after a few spins. Funky, up-tempo tracks do pop up at regular intervals, but it's the sparse, ethereal grooves that dominate the proceedings. DJ David Alvarado does get a little self-indulgent at times (some of the beats just go on, and on...and on). Overall, however, his mixing and matching are first-rate. The opening track, "Calling U" by A:xus, is about as laid-back as house gets. But it's also one of the best cuts on the album; beautiful vocals and an infectious melody make certain of that. Other standouts include the ultra-funky "The Jumbo Jet Jam" by Space Jam, Charly Brown's moody "Freaked Out," and the bass-heavy "What You Feel in Your Heart" by Dubtribe. There are also a couple of tracks that you might never get into -- "Stay the Night" by Fresh 'n' Low, for instance. Midnight Express is not the best Alvarado's come up with over the years, but it's a decent package nonetheless. ~ David Peter Wesolowski, All Music Guide
