Review

For 1962's Midnight in Moscow, Condon and the Dixieland All Stars -- here including trumpeter Bobby Hackett, pianist Dick Cary, Peanuts Hucko on clarinet, and Lou McGarity on trombone -- tackled the Dixieland hit of the previous year (recorded by Kenny Ball) and added nine other standards from around the world (or ones that at least referenced foreign territories). Hucko really shines here, indulging in a few delicious trills on the opener, "Meadowland," that evoke the old world nicely, and simply splendoring in his long, virtually unaccompanied solo during the stately "Londonderry Air." Condon and the band also allow plenty of room for Hackett's strong, melodic solos, making this a joyous occasion for some prime Dixieland revival jazz. ~ John Bush, Rovi
