Review

Not surprisingly, the music on this soundtrack album of songs heard in the horror film The Midnight Meat Train (based on a short story by Clive Barker about a subway serial killer) is not cheery. While only some of it harks toward heavy metal, a horror staple, notably the lead-off track, Iconcrash's "Strange, Strange Dark Star," most of it consists of ominous-sounding ballads with Goth and Industrial leanings. The percussion is prominent and metallic-sounding, the synthesizers produce eerie riffs, and the singers wail about lost love, if not actual lost life. The acts with female vocals -- Breaking the Jar (F/ Blind Divine), Apocalyptica, ALU -- come off as Evanescence wannabes; the rest sound like Nine Inch Nails. Dialogue from the film is provided in SLVTN's "Dismemberment Express," and score composers Robert Williamson and Johannes Kobilke get a couple of cuts, in addition to a separate album for their score. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
