Plot

The last in a series of very low-budget silent melodramas produced by film pioneer Fred J. Balshofer, Midnight on the Barbary Coast was also the final starring vehicle of one William Barrymore, a Russian-born poverty row regular who also acted under the monikers of Kit Carson and Boris Bullock. The director of this and other Barrymore/Carson/Bullock vehicles was legendary bad film-maker Robert J. Horner, a veteran of low-budget Westerns and action fare who was reportedly legless after a car accident and got around on a wooden platform on wheels. Horner continued to deliver low-budget fodder for the hinterlands until his death in yet another car crash near San Diego in 1935, an accident that also took the lives of child star Jackie Coogan's father and child actor Junior Durkin. In Midnight on the Barbary Coast, which Horner also wrote, Barrymore was supported by flamboyant silent screen villain Kalla Pasha and Horner regular Jack Richardson. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi
