French family of painters. (1) Nicolas Mignard was a successful painter of religious subjects, decorative schemes and portraits, first in Avignon and then in Paris; his work, which at first displayed Mannerist tendencies, came, after a stay in Italy, to reflect the influence of the Bolognese painters. His more distinguished brother (2) Pierre Mignard, similarly influenced by training in Italy, became the most outstanding portrait painter of his generation; his career was to some extent hampered by the opposition of the Acad?mie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris and Charles Le Brun, and reached its high point when he succeeded the latter as Premier Peintre du Roi.
