Mignon

Mignon (Thomas: Mignon). Mezzo-Soprano. She is the daughter of Lothario, and she was abducted as a child from her father's Italian castle and is ill-treated by a band of gypsies with whom she travels. She is rescued by Lothario, assisted by Wilhelm Meister, a student, who falls in love with her. In Italy they all learn the truth of their relationships. Aria: Connais-tu le pays? (‘Do you know the land?’), an aria which became a popular concert item. Created (1866) by Célestine Galli-Marié.
