Biography

Mike Fellows, aka Miighty Flashlight, has built his hushed and surreal future folk solo project out of his journey from bassist for seminal D.C. hardcore bands Rites of Spring and Happy Go Licky, to his work with Bonnie Prince Billy, Royal Trux, and the Silver Jews.

In 2000, Fellows began writing songs -- unsure of their destiny -- armed with a guitar, a bass, and a Mac Powerbook. He composed a collection of sublime, distinctly American tunes, and after playing them for some friends, was inspired to pursue his solo songwriting as Miighty Flashlight.

After refining the songs on computer, adding flourishes of piano and drums, Fellows released his self-titled Miighty Flashlight debut in January of 2002 on Jade Tree. The magnificent, flowing album, best listened to straight through from beginning to end, found fans the likes of Mogwai's outspoken Stuart Braithwaite and suitably quiet critical acclaim. ~ Charles Spano, All Music Guide

Miighty Flashlight is the alias of Mike Fellows, an American musician who has worked with several groups and artists since the early 1980s.[1][2] Such acts include Royal Trux, Silver Jews, and Will Oldham as well as the 1980s hardcore band Rites of Spring, with whom he played bass guitar.[3][4]

Solo work

In 2002, calling himself Miighty Flashlight, he released an eponymous album which drew comparisons to J.J. Cale and Discharge.[5][6]

In 2004, as Mike Fellows, he made Limited Storyline Guest which was released by UK label Vertical Form.[7]

Apart from the occasional guest guitar solo, both albums were home-recorded entirely by Fellows alone.[8]
