Biography

The older brother of Pat Metheny, Mike Metheny started off as a classical trumpeter. After graduating from the University of Missouri and serving in the Army, he was encouraged by his brother to play jazz. Already 25, Metheny attended Berklee and soon became a member of the faculty. He switched to flügelhorn, which he felt best-suited his soft tone and mellow style, and has recorded five albums as a leader for Headfirst (1982), MCA/Impulse, and Altenburgh (1995). Based in Kansas City, Metheny (who sometimes utilizes the EVI) has also recorded with Karrin Allyson and is a freelance music journalist. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
