Mike Rathje (born May 11, 1974 in Mannville, Alberta) is a professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL.

Playing career

He was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft (1st round, 3rd overall) and had played his entire NHL career with the Sharks until the Flyers signed him as a free agent prior to the 2005-06 NHL Season.

In the 2001-2002 NHL season, Mike Rathje held-out for more than half the season. One of the reasons he signed with Philadelphia was because former Sharks general manager Dean Lombardi was a player scout there. Rathje liked Lombardi because Lombardi had defended Rathje and praised his abilities.^{[citation needed]}

In December 2006, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Rathje's chronic back and hip problems could spell the end of his career. Recently though, Rathje has had very helpful surgery and has showed up to Flyers training camp, intent on regaining his NHL form.
