Biography

An Oscar-nominated costume designer who had his Hollywood heyday during the 1940s and '50s, Miles White made his mark in both Tinseltown's Technicolor extravaganzas and the musicals of the Broadway stage. A native of Oakland, California, White attended Berkeley and began designing costumes in the late 1930s. Although he made his greatest and most sustained impact on Broadway designing costumes for the original productions of Oklahoma!, Carousel, and countless other musicals, the designer received Oscar nominations for his work on The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), There's No Business Like Show Business (1954), and Around the World in 80 Days (1956). White also made contributions to such films as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), Bye Bye Birdie (1963), and The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964). His costumes were worn by the likes of Carol Channing, Tallulah Bankhead, Bette Davis, and Lena Horne. White, who also won two Tony Awards for his work, died in New York City of congestive heart failure on February 17, 2000. He was 85. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide
