'Harbour at Milford'. The modern town was founded only in 1793 by a deep, and already much used, natural harbour — 'haven' — on a tidal estuary. Milford 'Sandy Inlet' comes from the Old Scandinavian
melr 'sand' and
fjọrthr 'inlet' or 'fjord'. The Welsh name means 'Mouth of the two Rivers Cleddau', the name meaning 'sword'. The 'two' rivers referred to the Eastern and Western branches.
