'Harbour at Milford'. The modern town was founded only in 1793 by a deep, and already much used, natural harbour — 'haven' — on a tidal estuary. Milford 'Sandy Inlet' comes from the Old Scandinavian melr 'sand' and fjoÌ£rthr 'inlet' or 'fjord'. The Welsh name means 'Mouth of the two Rivers Cleddau', the name meaning 'sword'. The 'two' rivers referred to the Eastern and Western branches.
