The Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers is an independent 501(c)(3) project of the Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs. It is organized as a community support network with the goal of connecting atheist, humanist, and freethinking personnel of the U.S. military with each other and with local organizations.

In addition to community services, MAAF educates and trains both the military and civilian community about atheism in the military. MAAF supports constitutional separation of church and state and First Amendment rights for all service members, and aims to examine and respond to practices which they believe illegally promote religion over non-religion or unethically discriminate against minority religions and differing beliefs. MAAF also coordinates with other national organizations who hold similar values.

Jason Torpy, a former Army officer, has been MAAF President since 2000.[1]

In August 2007 Paul Krassner reported that an unidentified Army Major pretended to be a freethinker in order to attend the first meeting of atheist service members under the umbrella of the MAAF. The Major reportedly forced attendees to stand at attention while he yelled at, berated and humiliated them. The Major accused them of plotting against Christians and threatened them with punishment before shutting down the meeting.[2]
