Unlike residents of wealthier nations, the first phone people in developing regions own is sometimes a cell phone. Millicom International Cellular (MIC) provides cellular phone service to more than 38 million primarily prepaid wireless subscribers in 14 emerging markets with limited wireline infrastructure. The company's core service area is Latin America, where it does more than three-quarters of its business with 23 million mobile customers, in addition to some cable subscribers. It also has cellular operations and licenses in Africa, where it serves about 15 million subscribers. MIC sells products and services under the Tigo brand in most of its markets. Swedish investment firm Kinnevik owns 35% of the company.
