History

The 16th century village Miyamoto, considered the birthplace of Miyamoto Musashi, is part of the present-day Mimasaka.

Prior to the merger, the town was part of Aida District, Okayama.

As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 12,862 and a density of 147.89 persons per km². The total area was 86.97 km².
