Minamoto no Yoriie

Minamoto no Yoriie (源頼家?) (September 11, 1182 – August 14, 1204) was the second shogun (1202 – 1203) of the Kamakura shogunate of Japan. Eldest son of the founder of the Kamakura shogunate Minamoto no Yoritomo, his mother was Hōjō Masako. Born at Hiki Yoshikazu's residence in Kamakura, he had as wet nurses, among others, the wives of Hiki himself and of Kajiwara Kagetoki.

After his father's death in 1199, Yoriie became head of the Minamoto clan and was appointed Seii Taishogun in 1202. By this time however, the power of the shogun and the shogunate had already fallen into the hands of his grandfather Hōjō Tokimasa. His mother explicitly prohibited him any political activity. Yoriie in turn plotted to subjugate the Hōjō clan but failed, was put under house arrest, forced to abdicate and eventually assassinated by the Hōjō in Shuzenji (修善寺?) in Izu. Minamoto no Yoriie was succeeded by his younger brother Minamoto no Sanetomo as third shogun of the Kamakura shogunate.

His sons died of a violent death. The eldest, Ichiman, died as a child, victim of political intrigue. The last to die was Kugyō, who was forced to became a Buddhist priest and in 1219 at age 20 assassinated his uncle Sanetomo. Kugyō was himself immediately executed for his crime, thus bringing the Seiwa Genji dynasty to a sudden end.

The years in which Yoriie was shogun are encompassed within only one era name or nengō: Kennin (1201-1204)
