Review

The content and coherence of the typical Mindrocker volume varies widely. On both counts, this 28-song double album is one of the less impressive entries in the series. Populated by a lot of bands on the cusp between garage, pop, and psychedelia, it's easy to spot the influences -- Beatles, Stones, Beau Brummels, Yardbirds, whatever. But few of these obscure bands (such as Teddy & the Pandas, the Harbinger Complex, the Wildflower, Euphoria) made anything of their own out of these influences, except the brilliant Music Machine, whose four cuts are easily available elsewhere. Kinks fans might want to be aware of the Harbinger Complex's "My Dear and Kind Sir," though, as it's one of the most accurate approximations of Ray Davies' Something Else-era work ever done. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
