mineral supplementation

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Email

Substances usually taken in tablet or powder form to boost the dietary intake of minerals. They are commonly taken by athletes as an insurance against mineral deficiency and/or to enhance performance. However, there is little scientific evidence to support the value of taking such supplements (with the possible exception of calcium and iron) since the minimum daily requirements are usually easily met through a normal balanced diet. Nevertheless, athletes on a low energy weight-reducing or weight-maintenance diet, may be at risk of mineral deficiencies and should seek the advice of a sports dietician. Supplements should never be taken as an alternative to eating a well-balanced diet. See also sports nutrition.
